Actually, for me, I sort of grew up with it. My family consists of medical doctors and dentists. My granddad, my uncle, my dad my sister. It was just in my blood. I grew up wanting to be one of them. Qualities a dentist should possess? I think, being a dentist we’re both a physician and artist. You have to be a connection physician being able to diagnose problems. A lot of work we do is quite artistic. The fillings, veneers and all that. So, you still need to have a set of very artistic skills to do quality work. Top cosmetic dental procedure I would recommend is probably braces. Or nowadays, Invisalign also. Having straighter teeth not only gives you a more confident smile, but it gives you an ease of cleaning and maintenance. So it’s very easy to maintain compared to having crooked teeth and all. That’s the number one procedure I would recommend my patients to go for if possible. Celebrity with the best smile? I think Jennifer Aniston. She has a very balanced smile. When she smiles, you can see that her upper teeth just matches her lower lip. Very balanced. Very nicely done. A lot of people think if they take more calcium, their teeth will be stronger, which is not so true. Your teeth have developing when you were 6 or 7 years old. The amount of calcium that gets incorporated into the tooth is pretty much set by now already. No matter how much calcium you take, it will not get transferred into your tooth and make it stronger. Halitosis, or bad breath, there are quite a few causes for it. If we’re talking about dental causes, it could be due to gum disease or dental decay. Both of these can be treated well and you can maintain a good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing . That should get rid of the halitosis. But if we’re talking about coming from the systemic, it could be either you’re diabetic or having gastric problems. These two conditions will require a medical practitioner to look into it for you. The latest developments in dentistry nowadays are botox and dermal fillers. They’re starting to come into Singapore. I know overseas, a lot of dentists are doing it. Botox can be used to treat grinding problems and TM (Temporomandibular) joint problems. I know they’ve been doing some lip fillers; minor adjustments to get a natural contour of the lips. These are the two new, exciting fields. Dental loupes? Yes, definitely a worthy investment. It helps for us to be able to see things much clearer. Standard loupes’ about two and a half magnification, so it really helps compared to looking at a tooth with your naked eye. Some practors nowadays are moving towards having microscopes incorporated for their daily practice. So, it’s definitely a worthwhile investment for every dentist. Positives of being a dentist is giving back a patient their smile. Be it a denture or full mouth veneers, makeovers all these. All my patients will walk out of the clinic with a very happy smile.
