Cedric Chenet: As we chronologically mature,
one of the other signs of that we see in the oral cavity is gingival recession. The gum tends to pull away, and we get an
area of the tooth structure that’s exposed to the oral cavity that’s not covered with
the hard shell of enamel and the gum is pulled away, so we have that root structure that’s
exposed that’s not as dense, and it’s more susceptible to decay, especially with the
older population that we have in Florida. A lot of patients are on various medications
for various conditions and one of the side effects is xerostomia, or dry mouth. Whenever you lose the quantity, or even the
quality of your saliva that’s a defense mechanism that we have that we lose in our natural ability
to be resistant to decay.
