this is the story of Jane Smith a normal student leading a healthy lifestyle however… Ouch! it’s great that you were
eating grapes to stay healthy instead of other sugary or fatty food but in terms of tooth decay it’s actually how often rather than how much sugar you consume let’s take a closer look ! on the surface of your teeth there’s a battle being fought between acid and enamel which is made out of minerals when sugars enter the mouth they stick onto your teeth your mouth contains many bacteria some beneficial but also some harmful types these latter bacteria turn sugars into acid this acid strips away minerals the tiny particles of the tooth in a process called demineralization when sugars are consumed at a high
frequency and are in a form that stays in the mouth for long periods the loss of tooth minerals causes caries to develop normally, saliva could neutralize
this acid and bring back the lost minerals this is called remineralisation but if you keep helping yourself to more and more sugar faster than you can
neutralize and remineralize it your saliva gets overworked the acid produced by those bacteria cannot be countered anymore and your enamel becomes the losing
side However, fluoride in drinking water and toothpaste act as a protective mineral because it makes teeth more resistant to
acid attacks without fluoride your teeth can tolerate only a couple of sugar exposure times after the third sugar intake the acid can attack the enamel of the fluoride-free tooth and demineralization takes place the tooth that is protected with
fluoride is not affected and can tolerate up to six exposure times but if you keep eating sugar too frequently and you eat more than six or seven times saliva and fluoride won’t help you and your teeth lose what the fluoride had protected so the key message is to avoid frequent consumption of sugars Eat your grapes in one go drink plenty of water and brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice daily this is the way to stop tooth decay
