If you are considering a career in
dental hygiene, the UNC School of Dentistry’s dental hygiene program is
the place for you. Our dental hygiene program is one of the oldest programs in
the state. We are proud to say that we have been producing outstanding,
competent, dental hygienists for over 58 years. Welcome to UNC dental hygiene, my name is Vicky Overman, and I’m the director of
the program. Although there are 13 dental hygiene programs in North Carolina, ours
is the only baccalaureate degree program and the only one housed in a dental
school and a university setting. Being part of the UNC School of Dentistry
enables us to provide students with unique experiences in clinical patient
care, community dental health, and specialties, including geriatric
dentistry, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and research. Our emphasis
is on creating well-rounded dental hygiene healthcare professionals who
will treat a variety of patients and provide leadership in the profession. We
are UNC dental hygiene. Dental hygiene has been listed as one of the top
careers in the nation and is open to both men and women. A dental hygienist is
a licensed preventive oral health professional, who provides educational,
clinical, and therapeutic services to the public through the promotion of oral
health. In North Carolina, the dental hygienist works under the direct
supervision of a licensed dentist and is a vital member of the dental team. Dental
hygienists provide a number of patient care services, which include reviewing
the patient’s health history, oral cancer screenings, exposing and processing
dental x-rays, removing plaque and calculus from above and below the gum
line, educating patients and our community about the importance of oral
health care, and counseling patients on the harm of tobacco use and the
importance of good nutrition for maintaining optimal health. A BS degree
